How a Reload Bonus Works
Reload bonuses are an offer for existing players, rather than for new signups as with a welcome bonus. Existing players may claim reload offers, which can include weekly, weekend, loyalty program, or crypto-only rewards. Claiming a reload bonus may require opt-in, an entry code, or automatic qualification.
The Real Value behind the Match Size
Bonus match percentages are just one part of a reload bonus’s real value. The most important aspects are the total amount of wagering required to make the bonus available for withdrawal, and the games that the player must bet to meet those wagering requirements.
A reload bonus's wagering requirement, also called playthrough or rollover, is the total amount you must bet before bonus funds can be withdrawn. For example, a $100 bonus with a 35x requirement on the bonus means $3,500 in total bets before withdrawal.
The cost of clearing the playthrough depends on the house edge of the games used, which is 100% minus the game’s return to player (a slot with 96% RTP has a 4% house edge). The expected cost of chasing a bonus is then calculated by multiplying the amount wagered by the house edge, and can be compared to the size of the bonus itself to judge if a reload bonus makes sense to take, on average, in a casino game that allows this bonus.
Judging the Value of a Reload Bonus
A simple calculation can help weigh whether a reload bonus brings real value. Take the total wagering required and multiply it by the game’s house edge. If the result exceeds the bonus amount, then the bonus is expected to cost the player money on average, even if they meet the playthrough. For example, a 75% match on a $100 deposit adds $75; at 35x on the bonus that is $2,625 in wagering. On a slot with a 4% house edge the expected cost is about $105, more than the $75 bonus, so on average this reload is not worth taking.
An Example Reload Bonus
Suppose a reload bonus of 50% on a $100 deposit. The bonus funds will be $50, with a 25x wagering requirement on the bonus. The total amount to be wagered before the bonus can be used for withdrawal is $1,250. If the player wagers through a 4% edge slots game, the expected amount lost to the house’s edge would be $50, based on the 25x rollover and 4% house edge. Here the expected cost equals the $50 bonus, so the reload roughly breaks even before variance.
When to Pass on a Reload Offer
A casino reload bonus only makes sense when the bonus value itself exceeds or at least offsets the expected playthrough cost. Each player should examine the bonus’s terms to see the total wagers required, then consider the house edge of the participating games. If the bonus will cost the player more than it is worth, it is no bargain. Reload bonuses may look attractive when judged by their headline match size but can sometimes hold hidden costs.
