When an online casino offers a bonus, it's usually not just a free payout. There is always a "but" — part of what an online casino does is entice you to bet more and longer, and the house edge applies to each bet.

So if you got a $40 bonus with a 30x wagering requirement, you might think you just need $40 × 30 = $1,200. It is rarely that simple.

There are a few more factors affecting the conversion from free bonus credit to your cash:

How Wagering Requirements are Calculated

To get started, let's see how wagering requirements are calculated. The basic rule is simple: a $40 bonus with a 30x requirement means $40 × 30 = $1,200 in bets. The catch is what the multiplier applies to. The multiplier is figured on a base amount, not just on the bonus. There are two common bonus-math options:

  1. Bonus-only. This is often the case with casino-only matched deposits, where the bonus amount is the base for calculating the rollover. Bonus = 50% match up to $20, 30x. To cash out the bonus total, you'd bet $20 × 30 = $600.
  2. Deposit plus bonus. This is often the case with signup bonuses, where the casino-promised match finances get added to the player's deposit as a total. Deposit $100, bonus = 100%, 30x. To cash out the deposit plus bonus, you'd bet $200 × 30 = $6,000.

The rollover obligation is the total you must stake before the bonus converts to withdrawable cash.

How to Avoid Voiding a Bonus

Two separate rules can void a bonus and any winnings made with it:

  1. Maximum bet amounts. These limit how much a player can stake on a single bet, even if the player deposits enough to wager beyond that on one play. For example, if the cap is 10% and you had $400 in eligible funds, the maximum single bet would be $40.
  2. Time limits. These limit the interval for meeting the rollover. After the stated period, the bonus expires and its wagering progress no longer counts.

How to Use Bonus Terms to Clear the Requirement

The best clue to understanding a bonus requirement is not in the promo summary: it's in the player terms, which follow on either a next tab or the corresponding text document. What you're looking for is three things: the rollover base, the game weighting, and the expiration.

  1. Bonus rollover basis: bonus amount or deposit plus bonus
  2. Game contribution Weighting of contribution percentage by given game — the proportion of each wager that will count toward rollover.
  3. Maximum bet and Time remaining until forfeiture of bonus

If the bonus uses a rollover calculation on the bonus and deposit combined — this turns out to often be the case, especially with a 100% match — check the weighting and whether the favourite games have penalties. Stakes on blackjack and roulette often count only in part, or not at all, which raises the real amount you must bet.

A Worked Example

Say you deposit $1,000 and receive a $1,000 match, so you have $2,000 to play with. If the casino has a 30x wagering requirement, you need to wager 30 times the combined deposit and bonus, which is $2,000 × 30 = $60,000.

On a slot with a 96% RTP, $60,000 of bets costs about 4% of that, or $2,400, on average, which is more than the $1,000 bonus is worth.

That being said, before you play online with that bonus, make sure to check the terms and conditions and ask support to confirm anything that is unclear.
